Rotary Meeting Minutes February 9, 2015
This is the annual Sweethearts’ Night gala the Club does every year.  A lot of faces , and spouses, we haven’t seen in a while. Greeter was Jim Going.

The meeting was called to order at 6:30 by President John Pruitt.

As a Rotary Minute, President John reminded us that we have given over $150,000 in scholarships to deserving students over the years.
Guests introduction – we did something different this time.  Spouses told something about their member-spouses that we were unlikely to know.  Jim Goings also introduced his son, who has been a photographer at the White House
Alex Wyruchowski is our Student of the Month from Juanita High School

Announcements: Dave DeBois reminded us of the upcoming Everett Silvertips Hockey Game March 14. If we want to have dinner first at the nearby Brook Bros. restaurant, we need to arrive at the restaurant about 4:30.
Mr. DeBois also reminded us that February 26 is Rotary night at the Granite Curling Club, where starting at 7PM, we can watch some of our members participate.  Address is 1440 N128th, Seattle.  Pizza will be brought in.  Just show up.   The bartender is an unpaid volunteer, so remember to tip generously.  No need to dress warmly, as the spectator area is warm.

Eric Olsen reminded us that the tentative date for the Club golf tournament is Monday July 27 at the Bear Creek Country Club.

Dan Bartel announced that March 14 is the next Rotary First Harvest work party at Northwest Harvest in Kent.  Meet at 8AM at the HoughtonPark and Ride, near the NE 70th exit from 405.

Kathy Feek announced that the Park Place Theater will probably be closed for several years during the center’s renovation. A letter and/or petition will be circulated asking that provision be made to keep the theater open during the redevelopment process.

Mike Hunter needs volunteers to interview Student of the Month candidates from Lake Washington High School.

Bob Webb led us in a sing-along.  The over-all effect was good, but for some of us, it was not a pretty picture, or sound.  He did have a selection of classics from the American songbook.

Speaker:
Member Anne Hamilton and spouse Rick Mclung spoke about and presented pictures of their visit to Egypt, which ended in Cairo right as the first Tamir Square demonstrations began in January, 2011.  They like to tour on their own, so they can meet the people, and set their own agenda.  At times in Egypt, they did have to hire a guide and car, as that was the only way to get access to some of the area.
In Cairo, they found themselves at times in the middle of crowds demonstrating, or on their way to a demonstration.  At no time did they experience any hostility – most people asked them to take their pictures as they felt they were participating in an historic moment.  Phone and cell systems were shutdown at times, however.
They had difficulty getting to and through the airport as many people were trying to leave the area.  It took them many hours to navigate through the airport, and their plane waited for hours for most passengers to get to the plane.

Joker Pool – Pam Going had the lucky ticket, but failed to draw the Joker.  Only 13 cards left.  More tickets were drawn to give away the floral table centerpieces.
No meeting next Monday – Presidents’ Day.
Meeting was adjourned at 7:50.
