Toppling barriers standing between people and the cancer treatments that could save their lives
Oct. 06, 2025 6:40 p.m.
All the research, all the technology in the world ... is useless if someone can't get to their chemotherapy appointments. For over 40 years, the American Cancer Society has attacked this problem through its Road to Recovery program by connecting people who need rides with neighbors who volunteer to help out. It's been way short on drivers since the pandemic, though, causing most ride requests to be denied. So last fall, Jeff Molby of Chemoriders set off on a two-year bike tour around the country in search of drivers. He says it'll take a lot of help to pull off, both on the front lines and behind the scenes, and he’ll speak to Rotarians tomorrow night about the project and how Rotary can help.

Oct. 14, 2025 5:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.
Usually the club's social is held on the second Monday of the month. This month the second Monday is Indigenous People's Day, so members will not be gathering on that day. However, the club will hold an informal social gathering on Tuesday, October 14, at Moss Bay Hall. This is a wonderful opportunity to get to know your fellow Rotarians. Please invite people who are interested in learning more about Rotary. This is a great time for prospective members to ask questions and meet the members in an informal setting.

Oct. 25, 2025 4:30 p.m.
This event is the Rotary Club of Kirkland's evening to prepare and serve dinner to families in need who depend on St. John's Episcopal Church for this food support. Rotarians should show up sometime around 4:30 p.m. in order to cook and prepare the meal that starts at 6:00 p.m. Community Service chair Rick Walter will update volunteers after his Zoom meeting with the church's organizer who will detail out the event - then on the 19th there will be another Zoom meeting to make sure everything is on pace to proceed properly. The Rotary Club of Kirkland will need to provide 5 to 6 volunteers to help do all the prep and cooking in the kitchen - that (along with purchasing the meal) is the club's entire involvement. Volunteers may stay and enjoy the meal as many volunteers did last month. Most of these volunteers were part of set up and serving and cleanup. Contact Rick Walter to volunteer.

Making cents of K-12 education finance in Washington and the district
Nov. 03, 2025 6:40 p.m.
Fifteen years ago, when I launched my book, Outrageous Learning: An Education Manifesto, you were kind enough to allow me to speak on a topic I was passionate about. I am now 76 years old and still passionate about K-12 reform. I have returned to school to pursue a Ph.D. in Education. Part of my coursework involves understanding a key component of K-12 reform: the financial models. My 20-minute presentation, “Making Cents of K-12 education finance in WA and the district level,” offers an engaging look at how much we invest and the outcomes in K-12 education. A brief Q&A session follows. |
