The Rotary Club of Kirkland held an in-person meeting on May 6, 2024, at Madison House in Kirkland. President Gary Cohn called the meeting to order at 6:25 p.m.

John Storbeck and Michelle Cazeau served as greeters for the evening.
Kristin Olson led us in the pledge of allegiance, and President Gary led the reading of the Rotary Four-Way Test.

Recent Rotary speaker Anne Hess, executive director of the Kirkland Downtown Association and publisher of Greet Kirkland and BeLOCAL Kirkland, is asking for our club's help. The Kirkland Summer concert series in Marina Park has been nominated as one of the best outdoor concert series in the country by USA Today and KDA needs the help of our community to vote. The concert series is currently in 11th place and KDA hopes for it to rise to the top!
In appreciation for the Rotary Club of Kirkland's generous and longstanding support to reduce hunger in our community, the club is recognized as a member of the newly created Harvest Against Hunger Lifetime Giving Society. Lifetime Giving Society members have each contributed a total of at least $10,000. They are individuals and organizations that have played a pivotal role in sustaining the Harvest Against Hunger mission and enabled the agency to continue innovating to find new ways to increase access to nutritious produce by people in need. Society members are passionate about building healthier communities and more equitable food systems. The Rotary Club of Kirkland has contributed a total of $18,725. Harvest Against Hunger leadership says the club's commitment to making a difference for many who struggle to put enough food on the table has been a source of inspiration.
On May 2, the club's Rummage Sale Steering Committee and 21 members of its subcommittees, including four non-member volunteers, met to review the organization and major tasks for the second Great Kirkland Rotary Rummage Sale, planned for Saturday, July 13, at Kamiakin Middle School. Led by Dave DeBois, members of the operations team, volunteer team, finance team, food team, and the technology and marketing team met at the Brezza Condominium in downtown Kirkland to coordinate activities leading up to the second annual rummage sale.

The Kirkland Downtown Association invites Rotarians to join the KDA on May 19 for the Downtown Kirkland Clean Sweep! The KDA's mission with Clean Sweep is to vanquish litter, battle unruly weeds, and restore sparkle to teh downtown. Arm yourself with gloves, your most fearless grubby outfit, and your weapon of choice – be it brooms, shovels, rakes, or hoes. There are two shifts:
9:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
1:00 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.
Pick one that works for you and register using this LINK. Volunteers will meet at Realogics Sotheby’s International Realty, located in the heart of Downtown Kirkland at 15 Lake Street, Suite 200. The KDA is kicking off the event with coffee and donuts to fuel your heroic efforts, and lunch will be provided from 12 - 12:30 p.m. Marina Park or Lake St. lots offer free parking on Sunday.
District 5030 Governor Kaj Pedersen announced that the former Seahawk player and community leader Doug Baldwin, Jr. will be the keynote speaker at the District 5030 Celebration on the 24th of June! This will spur clubs and individual Rotarians to be a part of what will be a memorable District 5030 Celebration at the end of this Rotary year. Doug Baldwin is known for his amazing skills on the football field, for being a part of a Super Bowl championship team, and for remaining an active member of our community and spearheaded the development of the Family First Community Center in Renton, a project that the Rotary Club of Renton has been a partner in supporting. Doug is a leading voice for change in his community through service and represents a strong partner with Rotary in his belief of Service above Self!
Rotarians across District 5030 assembled on April 27 for a morning of fellowship and training. There were sessions available for those interested in making global and district grant applications, becoming treasurers and secretaries, conducting more effective meetings, and more. District Governor Kai Pedersen is preparing to conclude his year at district governor, which includes events such as presidents' business meetings, president-elect meetings, the annual district conference, and presenting the year-end financial report for the district. Based on information from Rotary International and District 5030, the Rotary Club of Kirkland Board of Directors has set the annual dues amount for 2024-2025. Rotarians' dues statements for 2024-2025 will be published on June 1, 2023, and are due by June 30, 2023.
