The Rotary Club of Kirkland held an in-person meeting March 3, 2025, at the Kirkland Eagles Club. Acting President Kate Koslosky presided at this meeting and called the meeting to order at 6:16 p.m.
Acting President Kate led us in the Pledge; Jocelyn Ellison led us in the 4-Way Test recitation.
Attending: David Aubry, Cody Baker, Gary Cohn*, Sue Cohn*, Don Dicks*, Sandy Ekins*, Jocelyn Ellison, Isabelle Kalisa, Kate Koslosky, Rick Ostrander, Rémy Pairault, Angela Pritchett, Daniel Sada Caraveo, and John Storbeck. *Attended via Zoom.
Guests: Rotary Student of the Month Madeleine Garrison, a junior at Lake Washington High School, and her mother Stephanie Garrison were guests of the club this day. Our speaker, Dr. Lewelyn Packia Raj, was also a guest of the club.
Rotary Moment:
Daniel Sada-Caraveo gave us a Rotary Moment centering on how keeping a copy of the Rotary magazine available and visible in his home often results in people who are guests in his home wanting to know more about and becoming interested in joining Rotary.
The club will not meet on Monday the 17th of March as originally planned. It is St. Patrick's Day, and the Fraternal Order of Eagles has a large St. Patrick's Day Party & Membership Drive --complete with a live band-- scheduled that day. This means the club must take the day off its meeting calendar this year.
Harvest Against Hunger invites club members to join other Rotarians at dinner on Friday, March 14, 2025 to support the Hearts & Wine 2025 event, promising an evening of fun, fellowship, fundraising, and wine tasting (beer, spirits, and non-alcoholic beverages, too). Rotarians will learn how hunger is affecting our community from different voices and the many ways Harvest Against Hunger is making connections to get healthy food to people in need. Matt Lorch, HAH's vibrant master of ceremonies and auctioneer, will auction unique food, wine and travel experiences. A voice described as soulful and rich, Sue Nixon and her trio will entertain as they traverse between classic jazz, blues, Latin and pop. The Hearts & Wine 2025 event runs from 5:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., and is held at the Pickering Barn, 1730 10th Ave NW in Issaquah. If you register by 5 p.m. this coming Monday, March 3, you will enter a drawing to win a beautiful wine gift basket, thanks to a donation from the Rotary Club of Kirkland.
Rotarians, our club's 2025 scholarship program has launched. The Rotary Club of Kirkland Youth Service Committee will meet on Friday, May 2, at 1:00 p.m. at Lake Washington High School to select the club’s college scholarship recipients. The youth service committee will gratefully accept further donations of scholarship funds! For 2025, the board of directors approved two scholarships of $3,000 for this year in addition to a $6,000 grant from the Kirkland Rotary Foundation to fund two scholarships. The club received gifts and commitments for several "specialty" scholarships this year, bringing our program total to $20,000. This year scholarship applications are open to Lake Washington High School seniors.
If you’d like to see the scholarships offered this year, just click on the image in this story. Scholarship applicants will again submit through the SmarterSelect online program. The Scholarship Night program is June 2, 2025 at St. John's Episcopal Church in downtown Kirkland. Thank you very much for your support of the Rotary Club of Kirkland’s scholarship program.
During the year past presidents are stepping up to preside at meetings while our president is away from club activities. Thank you to those all of the past presidents who've volunteered to lead meetings during the year. There are still a few meetings that need a presiding officer, especially January 27 and February 3, which are just around the corner.
There are several other roles that are necessary for smooth conduct of our meetings, whether in-person or virtual. Please sign up for several "open" meeting duties for this year. Our club needs your contribution to make the meetings effective and enjoyable for all of our membership. The meeting responsibilities matrix is available to you in the "Members" drop-down menu on the home page of the club's website. Like the committee table, the responsibilities table is updated regularly as club members add their names to the duties throughout the year. You may click HERE to jump to the table from this article. You may click HERE to send an email volunteering for meeting leadership and other duties.
