CLUB TO MEET AT POTENTIAL VENUES
Rotarians, the first three in-person meetings of 2024-2025 are scheduled at Kirkland area venues selected by teams of club members. The meeting dates and locations are on the club's Calendar.
The Rotary Club of Kirkland held a meeting on July 1, 2024 at the Fraternal Order of Eagles Meeting Hall in downtown Kirkland.
Past President Rick Walter acted as president of this meeting and called the meeting to order at 6:17 p.m.
Margie Glenn led us in the flag salute.

Rotarians will gather at the L'Experience Paris restaurant on Lake Washington Boulevard for their regular meeting on Monday, July 22, 2024. The restaurant is located in the space previously occupied by the Queen Bee in the Aegis Living Kirkland Waterfront building. Rotarians and guests will be treated to a selection of appetizers, select one main course from among three options, and then enjoy an array of dessert items.
Registration is now open for the 2024 Rotary Salmon Bake. Just click on the bold, blue type or go to the club's Calendar of events. As usual, invitations will go out to club members from ClubRunner as well. Once again this year, the salmon bake will be held at the Auslander Home on Yarrow Point. The reviews from last year's event were again positive, so The Catering Company has been engaged for the event again this year. The menu will be repeated this year, and the cost has been set at $40. Similar to last year, Rotarians are invited to bring side dishes and refreshments. Please coordinate those items through this year's club services chair, Doug Evanson. Registration for the dinner is through the ClubRunner events system, and the deadline for the catering count is noon on August21,2024. Due to overwhelming popularity, the frozen margarita bar, courtesy of our host and immediate past president, will be offered again this year while supplies last. In addition, a selection of other cocktails as well as beer and wine will be available.
Miguel Angel De Anda Rivera’s name carries important history: De Anda comes from his father and Rivera from his mother. Miguel says he is a Hispanic teenager currently finishing high school and living life; taking advantage of every moment that life gives him. Those moments and advantages brought him many accomplishments, he says, such as meeting friends, growing as a person, increasing his understanding with everything he learns, and improving his skills through photography, technology, and piano. His greatest accomplishment is making his family, friends, and especially my parents proud. His determination to work hard in and outside of school, to just be himself, and not to change based on what people want him to do or be makes them proud.
Bailey Cavender, the new deputy director of the Gray’s Harbor Historical Seaport, spoke to club members about the restoration of the tall ship Lady Washington. Rotarians learned the original vessel was the first ship to fly the American flag in the Pacific Northwest, information about GHHS and its mission, and about the many challenges involved in operating and maintaining a wooden sailing ship. Currently work is progressing on preparations for the complex task of repairing and replacing many integral parts of the ship. Because of her condition, the Coast Guard has restricted her operations to coastal and inland waters. Due to a technical issue, attendees were unable to view Bailey's PowerPoint presentation. Our new Rotary year brings warm greetings to another new member, and fond farewells to those who are leaving the club. Six of the club's number are leaving membership for retirement, to tend to families and business, or to move to a noon-time club. The club bids farewell and following seas to friends who will not continue with us as we embark upon 2024-2025:

Mannasey "Manny" Tetteh, a Rotarian from Ghana, was elected to membership and begins his new relationship with the club this month. Congratulations, Manny! The Rotary Club of Kirkland's new year begins with 37 active and honorary members.
Many club members responded to a paper survey distributed at the Leadership Transition Dinner and volunteered for both club committees and rummage sale teams for 2025. A few more responded to committee chairs who followed up with members to build committees. Eleven committees, not including the board, are active in the club. The listings below show how 21 of our 36 members, or 58% have made commitments to our avenues of service and club operations committees. Fifteen members have yet to complete the committee selection process. The club committees are listed in order of the number of member commitments, which are in parentheses. Rotary dues statements were sent to active members on June 1, 2024, and due by June 30, 2024. Reminder statements were mailed on June 15, 25, and 29 to all Rotarians with outstanding accounts. As of July 1, 76% of continuing club members had paid their dues. Board members elected to extend the due date for individuals who needed a little additional time to pay the $415. Dues may be paid by credit card or debit card using the online Dues & Billing System link in the June 1 invoice, or using the link in the reminder statements, or by logging into your account on the website. Members may also pay by check through the U.S. Mail.
On Thursday, June 13, 2024, the club's board of directors unanimously approved a proposed revision to Article 4 of the club's Bylaws, Duties of Officers, and elected to send the proposed revision to the membership via an online voting system as authorized in a recent update to the Bylaws. At the election date of June 24, 2024, 21 members voted (one-third, or 14, constituted a quorum for action) and all voted in favor of approval. Approval establishes an ex-officio, non-voting member of the board named "club executive secretary/director", a support position, similar to the sergeant-at-arms position, that is recognized by Rotary International and provided access to maintain club data (e.g., membership, officers).
