The new edition of the Great Kirkland Rotary Rummage Sale announcement posters, volunteer posters, and announcement postcards have arrived and are available at Banner Bank in downtown Kirkland. Members may obtain them today for posting and distributing around the community.
The new yard signs are expected to arrive at the bank on Tuesday, April 9. In addition, a new volunteer postcard is being designed and will be produced and available shortly. We're very grateful that Banner Bank has committed a major sponsorship for the project, and the new yard signs will carry that prime sponsor notation (see the image in this article).
The club's board of directors approved the Club Meeting Calendar 2024-2025 so that members may access the schedule of meetings for the upcoming Rotary year. Meetings have also been posted to the club's Calendar on the website. The schedule attempts to respect the club vote on the holding in-person meetings on the first and third Mondays, virtual meetings on the second Mondays, and scheduling bye weeks on the fourth and the occasional fifth Mondays. Adjustments were made to avoid holding only one meeting, or only one in-person meeting, during January and February when Monday holidays interrupt the meeting cadence. Adjustments were also made to relieve members of meetings adjacent to the rummage sale in July. The one-page annual calendar and the website Calendar will be updated from time to time as the year unfolds.
On February 8, 2024, the Kirkland Arts Center celebrated its latest exhibition, “Coronarya: Crisis, Color, Control”, and one of our Rotary Club of Kirkland members and his spouse. It's reported that the highlight of the evening was the presentation of the prestigious HeART of the Community Award by Kirkland Arts Center board president Chris Lye to Don and Merrily Dicks. The award is a symbol of recognition for outstanding support and dedication to the arts and community service. It was awarded to Don and Merrily in acknowledgment of their remarkable contributions. Don is shown in the photo with his daughter, Shelley Schwinn, and Rupa Palasamudram, the artist who created award vase.
On April 1, Rotarians welcomed former member Dr. Susan Cohn back into the club's ranks, and as the club's first member added under the spouse/partner membership category. Sue is a life-long Washingtonian and Kirkland resident for 22 years. She was an educator for 47 years, serving as a math teacher, track coach, cheer and class advisor, assistant principal and principal and as school/district improvement facilitator in multiple Washington districts.
While serving as the principal of Juanita High School, Sue joined and served the club for over five years with the support of then-superintendent Dr. Bud Scarr, leaving membership when her husband, Gary, accepted a job in Port Angeles. Sue has served as a board member and president for both the Sno-Isle and Clallam County Library systems, as a King County Library Foundation board member, a Port Angeles Food Bank board member and volunteer, and as a member of Kirkland Planning Commission. She earned bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees from the University of Washington.
