Scholarship Spotlight: Megan Wong
Several of the Rotary Club of Kirkland's 2020 scholarship recipients have written to share something of their first year after high school.  In this edition of the Spokesman, Rotarians hear from Megan Wong, recipient of one of last year’s general Rotary scholarships.  Here is her message to the club's membership:

Hi Kirkland Rotary! I can’t believe a year ago I was a senior in high school, worrying about college decisions, AP exams, and all the other stresses that come with being a high schooler. After entering my first year at the University of Washington, I certainly feel like a lot has changed. I’ve met some wonderful friends, refined my study habits, and explored areas that I’m interested in on my path to a degree in Chemical Engineering. After being accepted as an Undergraduate Research Assistant at the Nance Lab on campus, I have been conducting research on nanoparticles and drug loading for brain therapeutics. Our lab is working towards more effective treatment methods for conditions that lead to cerebral palsy and developmental delay (a super exciting research area!). I have also joined the UW Solar Club, where we are writing a Campus Solar Plan to guide the university’s solar projects over the next twenty years. I certainly wouldn’t have access to these incredible opportunities if not for the support of Kirkland Rotary, so from the bottom of my heart, thank you all so much for believing in me and my goals! Looking forward to meeting you all in the future!

Scholarship Spotlight: Colton Bailey
Several of the Rotary Club of Kirkland's 2020 scholarship recipients have written to share something of their first year after high school.  In this edition of the Spokesman, Rotarians hear from Colton Bailey, recipient of one of last year’s general Rotary scholarships.  Here is his message to the club's membership:

I am attending Western Washington University and I plan on majoring in public health with a goal of working with communities on bridging the communication gap between insurance, doctors, and pharmaceuticals.

The wonderful scholarship I received from the Kirkland Rotary has helped me with financial planning and, as a bonus, helped me with motivation for my current and past quarters of college. Receiving this scholarship motivated me to press forward towards my goals as my plans for the future feel vindicated by a scholarly group of individuals, proving to me that I am following the right path for my future. I can't thank the Rotary enough for all the help they have given me to pursue my dreams during the challenging times of COVID-19.

With sincere gratitude,
Cole Bailey
