The Rotary Club of Kirkland held a virtual meeting using Zoom on August 12, 2024. Past President Gary Cohn presided at this meeting and called the meeting to order at 6:15 p.m.
Michelle Cazeau led us in the Pledge, and Cody Baker led the recitation of the Four-Way Test.
Attendees were: David Aubry, Cody Baker, Michelle Cazeau, Gary Cohn, Sue Cohn, Donald Dicks, Sandy Ekins (Honorary), Doug Evanson, Rashmi Garimella, Kate Koslosky, Rick Ostrander, Daniel Sada Caraveo, John Storbeck, Alice Volpe, and Rick Walter.
Visiting Rotarians:
The club welcomed Dick Carlson, a ‘Sun-Bird’ with the Catalina Rotary Club in Tucson, Arizona who is with us through September.
Guests:
Ben Mishkanian, a Kirkland resident, joined the club for the online meeting. Ben found the club through the website and is interested in Rotary.
During the past two months, club members have been sampling three venues suggested and researched by Rotarians: Fraternal Order of Eagles, L'Experience Paris, and Sparrow Restaurant. Following the "test" meetings at all three venues, a short survey was created to assess members' location preferences. Of the 36 club members to whom surveys were sent via SurveyMonkey, two emails bounced and 15 responded (41.6%)*. The overwhelming choice among the three locations is the Fraternal Order of Eagles (71.4%). Members may review the results by clicking HERE (a ClubRunner log-in is required). During discussion of the results and the pro's and con's of each location, a motion was approved** to try a fourth venue, Kabab House (12041 124th Avenue NE, Kirkland, WA 98034) in the Totem Lake area, prior to making a venue decision for this year. Alice Volpe is coordinating this venue trial, and the September 16 in-person meeting is now scheduled to be held at Kabab House.
Katherine Montgomery says her proudest accomplishment is beginning acting in June of 2023, and then being accepted in February of 2024 into Emerson College for Acting (the seventh best acting program in the country). Unfortunately, the school is far too expensive, but she’s proud of that accomplishment nonetheless. Katherine has been trying to write novels since she was in seventh grade, and says she’s slowly getting better and better. Katherine has written over 800,000 words of content and is hoping with more thought and dedication into honing her craft --as well as training and experience that only college can provide-- that she can one day become a published author. Another plan for her future is to be somewhere on a stage or screen performing. Katherine loves performing with her whole heart and it's truly the only time she enjoys having eyes on her. Whether she’s on Broadway, making music, acting, or doing stand-up comedy, doesn’t really matter to her. Katherine is the recipient of a $3,000 Charles O. Morgan Communications Scholarship.
Registration is now open for the 2024 Rotary Salmon Bake. Register using the invitation sent to past, present, and prospective club members this week, or click on the bold, blue type above, or go to the club's Club Calendar of events. Again this year the salmon bake will be held at the Auslander Home on Yarrow Point. The Catering Company has been engaged for the event and the menu will be repeated this year. Similar to last year, Rotarians are invited to bring side dishes. Please coordinate those items through this year's club services chair, Doug Evanson. Due to overwhelming popularity, the frozen margarita bar, courtesy of our host and our immediate past president, will be offered again this year while supplies last. In addition, a selection of other cocktails, beer, and wine will be available.
During the year past presidents are stepping up to preside at meetings while our president is away from club activities. Thank you to those all of the past presidents who've volunteered to lead meetings during the year. There are several other roles that are necessary for smooth conduct of our meetings, whether in-person or virtual. Please sign up for several "open" meeting responsibilities for this year.Our club needs your contribution to make the meetings effective and enjoyable for all of our membership. Rotary dues statements were sent to active members on June 1, 2024, and were due by June 30, 2024. Reminder statements were mailed on June 15, 25, 29 and August 1 to all Rotarians with outstanding accounts. As of August 12, 88% of continuing club members had fully paid their dues, and four accounts had outstanding balances. Dues may be paid by credit card or debit card using the online Dues & Billing System link in the June 1 invoice, or using the link in the reminder statements, or by logging into your account on the website. Members may also pay by check through the U.S. Mail.
This month we say a fond farewell to one of our newer members who finds it necessary to leave the club. The membership bids farewell and following seas to Judge Peter Peaquin who will not continue with us as we sail on into 2024-2025. Peter has determined that the judicial code of ethics to which he is now bound --since his investiture as a superior court judge-- makes it difficult for him to participate in club fundraising activities while he serves on the bench. We will miss Peter and keep the light on for him when he is no longer bound by the code. The Rotary Club of Kirkland's year continues with 36 active and honorary members.
