Guests: We had as an honored guest Mr. Jay Harris of the Evergreen Health Foundation, who has begun the application process for membership in the club. Our other guest was our speaker, Carmin Dalziel of the Kirkland Community Foundation.

Rotary Moment

We were treated to TWO Rotary Moments – the first by Sandy Ekins, the Club’s first woman member AND first woman President in 1992-93. She treated us to the story of how she was recruited as a member by Lon Brown and Bill Woods. She recounted some of her adventures and noted that she has remained in touch with many members. She is proud to be the first woman member of the Rotary Club of Kirkland, and is now the second Honorary Member of the Club in recent history.

Rick Walter recounted his experience with Rotary clubs in the Los Angeles area, and how he observed how they had a goal of providing one X-ray machine for an African hospital and managed to actually come up with resources to provide two machines. One woman guest who observed this wound up contributing $25 and began the process of becoming a member the following week.

March 17 Regular Meeting Cancelled
The club will not meet on Monday the 17th of March as originally planned. It is St. Patrick's Day, and the Fraternal Order of Eagles has a large St. Patrick's Day Party & Membership Drive --complete with a live band-- scheduled that day. This means the club must take the day off its meeting calendar this year.

Meet April's Student of the Month
Rotary Club of Kirkland's Student of the Month for April, Mabel Wong, who will join the club for its April 7, 2025 meeting. Mabel is a compassionate, understanding, and hardworking student. She is always striving to help others the best that she can and provide the best service to her community. She plans to go to college and major in a field of Biology or a related field and hopes to one day become a doctor who can make a positive difference in healthcare. A challenge Mabel faced is the ability to communicate with people effectively but has since then learned how to understand and talk to people of all ages through her various volunteering and work experiences. Mabel has earned a 4.0 GPA her freshman and sophomore years of high school. She also volunteers at EvergreenHealth Hospital where she works at the information desk and assists visitors as well as helps discharge patients. She also volunteers at the Evergreen Health Geriatric Care Clinic where she aids the clinic staff in any way she can. Additionally, she has spent the summer dedicating 100 hours to volunteering at a kids summer camp called Little Medical School where she taught kids from the ages of 4-11. Mabel's goal is to make a positive impact on her community and help others in any way she can.
Still Need Volunteers for Meeting Duties
During the year past presidents are stepping up to preside at meetings while our president is away from club activities. Thank you to those all of the past presidents who've volunteered to lead meetings during the year. There are still a few meetings that need a presiding officer, especially January 27 and February 3, which are just around the corner.

There are several other roles that are necessary for smooth conduct of our meetings, whether in-person or virtual. Please sign up for several "open" meeting duties for this year. Our club needs your contribution to make the meetings effective and enjoyable for all of our membership. The meeting responsibilities matrix is available to you in the "Members" drop-down menu on the home page of the club's website. Like the committee table, the responsibilities table is updated regularly as club members add their names to the duties throughout the year. You may click HERE to jump to the table from this article. You may click HERE to send an email volunteering for meeting leadership and other duties.
