The Declaration of Rotarians in Businesses and Professions was adopted by the Rotary International Council on Legislation in 1989 to provide more specific guidelines for the high ethical standards called for in the Object of Rotary:

As a Rotarian engaged in a business or profession, I am expected to:

Consider my vocation to be another opportunity to serve;

Be faithful to the letter and to the spirit of the ethical codes of my vocation, to the laws of my country, and to the moral standards of my community;

Do all in my power to dignify my vocation and to promote the highest ethical standards in my chosen vocation;

Be fair to my employer, employees, associates, competitors, customers, the public, and all those with whom I have a business or professional relationship;

Recognize the honor and respect due to all occupations which are useful to society;

Offer my vocational talents: to provide opportunities for young people, to work for the relief of the special needs of others, and to improve the quality of life in my community;

Adhere to honesty in my advertising and in all representations to the public concerning my business or profession;

Neither seek from nor grant to a fellow Rotarian a privilege or advantage not normally accorded others in a business or professional relationship.

Program:

Patti Smith introduced our speaker, Mike McGavick, contender for U.S. Senate, who presented his view of "Business in Washington".  Mike advised us of Trends of which he has concerns:

International

1.  Terrorism - the war between Global Cultures.  The trend of individuals actively plotting our destruction has profound implications.  Many societies are divided by a very few very rich, which is creating hatred towards the U.S.

2.  Globalization -  and it's effect on economics.  There is an increased combination of poverty and disease.  The world has stake in Global Economic Development.

3.  Global Warming - it is very evident that we as humans are creating this problem.  We must work together with other developing countries to avoid repeating this same cycle.

4.  Global Unrest - we as a country are involved in too much International Police Activity.  We must get Congress back in the driver's seat in deciding when America should go to war.

5.  Aging Trends - we are a society that works shorter periods of our lifespan, therefore leaving fewer workers to support more retirees.

Domestic as applies to Washington State

1.  Boeing - should still be a part of our connectivity with the world.

2.  Bio Technology - funded by Foundations and Government, we should work toward solving diseases.  To this end we need laboratories.

3.  Environment and Agriculture - we need to teach the rest of the world how to balance these two elements.  We need to pass on to the world the solutions to environmental challenges.

4.  Consumption of Fossil Fuels - we need to teach the world hot not to create pollution, therefore creating a sustainable environment that valuable to the rest of the world and liveable for future generations.

The winning ticket was Mike Hunter who did not draw the winning marble and joins the Losing Circle.  President Steve gave us a thought to ponder...."How much deeper would the oceans be if sponges didn't live there?" The meeting was adjourned by President Steve at 7:50pm.

Respectfully, Dianne Santeford
