Rotary Club of Kirkland meeting January 3, 2011

President Pat Dye called the meeting to order - Karin Quirk led the chapter in the Pledge of Allegiance,   Diana Lanspa was the Greeter for the evening Rick Walter was the Scribe.

 

Guests included Maxwell Assari from Nigeria who is a neighbor of Jim Going; Chris Rusnak who is the husband of Rotary member Elizabeth Rusnak; Alex visited us again, he is the student of the month for Juanita High School;  we also had Jim Hart, a long time member of the Kirkland Rotary grace our presence.

Announcements - Dan Bartell wanted to remind everyone about the First Harvest work party this weekend.  Meet at the Houghton Park and Ride @ 8:00am if you want to carpool.   Please see the website for details.  Rick Ostrander let us know what our club helped raise for the Salvation Army and that they would like us back again next year.

 

Unusual Happenings - President Pat was hearing music in her head.  Just before we had her committed, the music was heard by all and we voted to allow her to continue.

 

Happy Dollars - Chuck went around the room and let everyone tell us about their blessings.

 

Other Points of Interest - The club determined that Canada was not a state.   In addition, the members sang Happy Birthday to Joanne Burns (this Thursday).   Joanne has posted her address on the website for the forwarding of any gifts and cards.

 

PROGRAM:

Chuck Brockway took over duties as MC of "Getting to Know You".  Three members are featured who remind long-time members and educate newer members on who they are and what they do.   

Steve Shinstrom - 11 years of membership in this group Steve reminded us that we was born, bred, educated, married (Patty for 22 years), worked, fathered two wonderful sons, runs a successful business - all from the little town of Kirkland (Graduated from the UW).  He also mentioned that his grand father C.A. Shinstrom was a Charter Member and his other grand father Howard Lee was a founding member of the Rotary Club of Kirkland and his Uncle Frank Shinstrom was President of the club in 1959-1960.

G.G. Getz - 17 years of membership in this group G.G. gave us all an English lesson is nouns and adjectives. She has two daughters - three granddaughters and has worn so many hats in her life so far - 4th grade teacher - Windermere Agent for 20 years -   Director/Executive Director of numerous Not-For-Profits - Art Advocate - Community Activist - Dwayne Lund Award recipient - Party Planner and Gourmet Cook. She was also the second woman to be president of this club. 

Jim Hart - 47 years as a member in this group Jim arrived in Kirkland in 1931 - on his way to Alaska. His father-in-law designed the sewer system in Kirkland. Jim ended up in Concrete, WA for eight years (we assume that the rest of the inhabitants of that city were all from North Carolina).  Jim came back to Kirkland and joined his father-in-laws firm. He has been married for 63 years, Jim has three daughters - four grandchildren - five great grandchildren.  However, his crowning achievement was being "Crowned Queen of Moss Bay Days" - we are so proud of you Jim.

 

No one won the Joker Pool and the meeting was adjourned at 7:53pm
