Minutes of Rotary Meeting 6/18/07

The Meeting was called to order at 6:35 PM by President Steve Brown

John Pruitt led us in the flag salute

Wendy Allan acted as Greeter

The Inspirational Moment was given by Sharon Chambers, who spoke about people making changes in their lives.  She illustrated this by describing the stages people go through in the process of recognizing issues, accepting responsibility, and making changes to their behavior.

Introductions & Visiting Rotarians:

Brett Johnson introduced Laura Avery, our Student of the Month from Lake Washington High School.

Rick Ostrander introduced former Kirkland Rotary Club member and President Dick Weston, now visiting.

Dave Aubry introduced Roy Kauer, of the Federal Way Sunrise Club, visiting for the second time.

Announcements:

President Steve drew our attention to a recent advertisement in the Kirkland Courier-Reporter for the upcoming Duck Dash, and of a 2-page article about Miracle league.

Ken Hollingsworth had recent serious surgery, but is now recovering at home and doing well.  He would enjoy visitors.

The Lake Washington Drill Team has been successfully selling Duck Adoptions; they are having a couple of car washes [7/7 and 8/25] at the Bridle Trails Dairy Queen.  All Rotarians should take the opportunity to get clean cars and to reciprocally assist the LW Drill Team.

Transition Dinner sign-ups are on the tables.  It will be a Hawaiian Luau informal dress and with more socializing and less formality than in the past.  Wear your colorful Hawaiian shirts and shorts.

Our speaker July 16 will be the National Teacher of the Year from Granite Falls, WA.

Miracle League is done for the year - went very well.  42 kids participated.  There was a celebration party with the Mariner Moose and team pictures.  Katherine Kehrli recognized several individuals and organizations for their efforts with Miracle League.

Al Hoviland announced that last week's Golf Tournament was a success.  Al himself won the Ugly Monkey for his golf shoes.

Diane Santeford announced that the July 4th Picnic preparations are going well - still need a Parking Chair.

Barb Seaton reminded us that annual dues are due.

Bob Webb spoke about Duck Adoptions and about Race Day activities; still plenty of slots in which to sell adoptions.  Also will need help on race day to set up and take down the race course and pack up the losing ducks.  Especially need folks to sell along the parade route downtown before the parade.

Chuck Morgan is continuing to improve and is moving back to the Plaza assisted living facility this Thursday.

Duck Branding Party will be at Lee Johnson Chevrolet, Thursday evening, June 28.  Need lots of people for 1-2 hours [it's actually fun and you get pizza].

Lorraine McGonnahy [sp?] - Historian at the Museum of History and Industry, distinguished author and researcher, spoke and showed fascinating pictures about the industrialization of Lake Washington following the lake's connection to Puget Sound via the Ballard Locks.  She focused on the development of the lake Washington Shipyard, especially during WW II, and its influence on the changes in Kirkland.  Ms. McGonnahy actually had spoken before the Club 24 years ago.

Wendy Allan had the lucky ticket and did not draw the Rotary Blue marble, thereby qualifying for the repechage drawing later this year.

President Steve adjourned the meeting at 7:56PM.

Respectfully submitted,

David Aubry, Acting Scribe
