President Rachel opened the May 12, 2008 meeting promptly at 6:30 PM. Allen Barer led the pledge to the Flag.

 

Visiting guests in attendance were:  Helen from the NanaimoBCCanada club who presented us with a banner. Vincent Lucera our student of the month, and of course our international student Pascal Weber. (As an aside Pascal was successful in persuading Veronica to be his date at the Graduation Prom) and Principal, Diane Herman of JohnMuirElementary School, Who offered her thanks on behalf of the school for the Kirkland Rotary Club's contributions.

Announcements:  Sadly we are losing member Joan Hernandez to another club inst West      Seattle as, happily for her she has received and offer and promotion to Vice President  of instruction to S. Seattle Community College

 

Patti Smith reminded us about donations for door prizes for the up Coming June 9th Golf Tournament.

 

Alan Hoviland reminded those who are forming foursome for the golf tournament to sign up now!

 

Katherine Kerhli announced last Sat. Miracle League a great success! There is another game at PerigoPark in Redmond (the park is at the base of Redmond hill just past the Target store and UPS. Come out and volunteer YOU WILL HAVE A GREAT TIME AND LOVE IT!

 

Program:   Patti Smith introduced Larry Springer this evening's guest speaker. Larry who really needs no introduction is a former four time Mayor of Kirkland and presently serves as a Democratic local representative in the Washington Legislature and is the new Majority Leader of the Floor.  Larry talked to us about the Washington State Budget, Water Allocation in eastern WA,  Crisis in Affordable Housing ( average family income in King Co is about $74,000/yr whiles the Median house cost for a single family dwelling is approaching $500,000) and plans for the new 520 Bridge. Larry was inundated with lots of questions and a good discussion was had by all.
