The November 1, 2010 Kirkland Rotary meeting was called to order by President Pat Dye.  Bill Woods lead our Pledge to the Flag; Barb Seaton shared our recent community service project erecting a “Jungle Gym” for kids at Rose Hill Meadows Park behind the Walgreen’s on 85th.  For those that weren’t there think of a huge Tinker Toy Set with pieces each weighing 10 to 60 pounds.

GUESTS  Visiting Rotarians included our exchange student, Jason, who helped with the Jungle Gym and experienced his first Halloween dressed as a zombie (See Photo).  Rick Walter, a CPA, visited again and was introduced by Dan Bartel.  Amy Wade , a business analyst from Starbucks, was introduced by Sue Greenfeld.  Doug Carter was introduced by Gary Bruner.  Stephanie King, our student of the month from Juanita HS, was present and will give her talk next week.  Don Jansen, husband of our speaker, and an attorney, also visited.

MINI-TALKS  Jay Inslee, our congressman from the 1st District visited and his opponent Rob Watkins was present also.  Each gave a very short summary on why they should represent us and urged us to vote if we haven’t yet.  Jackie Lorentz, Development Director of First Harvest visited to receive a $1000 check for First Harvest from our club.  She also told us about the greeting cards available from First Harvest which represent a present in the recipient’s name.  For details see the First Harvest website.

HAPPY DOLLARS  Much fun was had by all with various descriptions about happiness.

PROGRAM   Janice Law provided our program this evening.  Judge Law is a very interesting lady who was a journalist before going to law school.  She became a prosecutor in both the municipal then appeals court, then was made a judge in Texas.  Retired from being a judge, she has reverted back to being a journalist and has written 5 books.  She described her first case as one of three most meaningful cases ever to go to the U.S. Surpreme Court.  They were Brown vs. Brd. of Education which declared segregation in schools unconstitutional, Roe vs. Wade legalizing abortion, and Lawrence vs. Texas which legalized gay rights.  Her talk was about Lawrence vs. Texas and it is all in her book, “Sex Appealed: Was the U.S. Supreme Court Fooled?”  To see the answer to this question get the book and for a preview see www.JudgeJaniceLaw.com .  It was a very good program.

TICKET DRAWING AND ADJORN There were two drawings this evening.  Our guest, Rick Walter, won a book of his choice from Judge Janice.  John Overleese won our drawing, won the $10, but didn’t pick the Joker out of the deck.  Now there are only 34 cards left and the “pot” is well into the hundreds of dollars.  Our meeting ended about 7:40.
