Rotary Meeting Monday October 11, 2010

 

President Pat Dye opened the meeting at 6:15 and the flag was saluted by all.

This was a joint meeting with the Kirkland Chamber of Commerce and the Kirkland Rotary featuring candidates from the 48 th District debating in a panel format. 

 

Announcement :

Rotary Plus Polio week 18-24 October. Go on-line at Rotary International and any donation made this week will earn the Rotarian two for one credit points that may be used to purchase a Paul Harris.

Two announcements have been made via Club Runner soliciting nominations from our Club for District Governor. The board will select a candidate at the next board meeting.

 

Dick Westin passed on the sad news that Jerry Marsh is now in the Aegis Assisted Living facility and is not expected to return home. Visitors are welcome though Jerry may not be able to acknowledge their presence.

 

Mike Hunter indicated that last Saturday's Rotary First Harvest work party was successful and Jason Wang, Exchange Student was present.

 

Outbound Exchange student nominations for next school year and next summer program are now being received and evaluated by the committee. If you know of a young student please encourage them to submit an application.

 

October 23rd Kirkland Rotarians will be helping the Parks Dept with the upkeep of Rosehill Meadows Park. If you would like to participate in this activity please email Don Dicks and plan to meet at the Park at 9am.

Philip Wilson - Republican running against Deb Eddy

Rodney Tom - incumbent Democrat

Gregg Bennett - Republican running against Rodney Tom

Ross Hunter - incumbent Democrat

Diane Tebelius - Republican running against Ross Hunter

 

After the candidates introduced themselves and directed a question at their opponent, each of the audience tables asked questions.

1)   How should Olympia work with the unions to help solve budget problems?

2)   How can we change our education system to be more competitive and not 42nd in the nation?

3)   What does bi-partisan work in Olympia mean to you?

4)   What do you think about workers compensation - should it be privatized?

5)   How would you suggest that the 520 bridge be completed.

 

 

Rotary meeting was adjourned at 8pm by President Pat Dye.
