The October 19, 2009 Kirkland Rotary meeting was called to order by President Jim Feek.  Bob Webb was the Greeter.  Ernie Norehad again gave two meaningful quotes of inspiration.

GUESTS  Visiting Rotarians included Scott Fast of the Bellevue Club and Nancy Evans of Seattle International Club.  Nancy is an architect and lives in Kirkland.

Christine and Doug _______   are visiting.  They are Selis's next host family; Selis will join them November 1.  Christine was a Rotary exchange student as a high schooler.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

President Jim thanked Steve & Patty Shinstrom for their usual excellent hosting of Bunko Night which was fun for all.

Brandon announced that Shirley Metcalf and Roy Selvidge will chair the scholarship program for this year.  He also is looking for a brief vocation presentation for next week's meeting on Vocations.

Barb Seaton announced that the club will support Hopelink in supplying potatoes and yams for their Thanksgiving Dinner.  Please bring a bag of either or both to the November 16 meeting.  (There will still be the canned goods collection on November's 2nd meeting which is November 9.)

Dave Aubry is working on the Wine Weekend for next month.  The dates had to be moved to one week later - November 20-21.  Anyone interested please contact Dave.

John Overleese reviewed upcoming Club Service activities.  The Kirkland Rotary Holiday Party will be at Lucia Restaurant on December 6.  Also a joint weekend meeting with the Leavenworth Rotary Club in January is being planned.

Carl Boruck made a plea for payment for several past activities of our club.  Several of us, according to Carl's records, still owe for Wilde Rover, Salmon Bake, Picnic at Everest Park, and even the Transition Dinner.  Please see Carl.  He will also be sending emails to those folks on his records.

Patty Sims reminds us all to include our exchange student, Selis Atakoy, in our activities.

President Jim reported a very appreciative letter from the Kirkland Boys and Girls Club for our gift of $1800 to the club's building program.  This is Kirkland City tax from last year's Duck Dash that we then are allowed to direct to a charity on Kirkland's list.

HAPPY DOLLARS    Chuck Brockway gave everyone an opportunity to update those present on events of their lives in return for a generous donation to our club.  The usual lively time resulted to the benefit of Kirkland Rotary.

PROGRAM    The program tonight was our 2009-2010 Exchange Student, Selis Atakoy.  Selis introduced us to her home country with a lovely slide show which included history, geography, government, attractions, and people of Turkey.  Turkey extends about 1000 miles in an east-west direction, spans both Europe and Asia with the Mediterranean Sea on the South and the Black Sea and Georgia on the North.  Selis told us the large extent of the Ottoman Empire which ultimately fell during World War I and was saved from partition by the Allies by the Turkish Army led by Mustafa Kemal Attaturk.  We saw pictures of Istanbul, Ankara, Cappadocia, and others.

TICKET DRAWING AND ADJORN Our meeting ended about 7:30 with drawing of the lucky ticket that somehow turned up with our speaker Selis.  And, such good luck, with careful choosing the number "one" when given the choices of a number between "one" and "one" was the proud winner of some money.

Respectfully submitted (but late)

Bob Webb
