Speaker
Patti Smith announced Dr. Frank Smoll, PhD., Dept of Psychology at UW. He is widely published and  in 2002 was awarded the distinguished practice award. His talk was on a project he and a colleague have been working on with a grant from the William T. Grant Foundation called YesSports www.y-e-sports.com <
http://www.y-e-sports.com> .
The primary purpose of the project is to get coaches and parents on the same page to help students excel and obtain real lessons that youth sports can provide.  The aim is to create a mastery climate of sportsmanship and provide a developmental model of sport as an arena for learning. This is in contrast to professional sports, which is product oriented and is about playing for money.  Where the lesson of youth sports is lost is when youth sports is professionalized and the coaches become bottom line oriented and parents become belligerent and demanding.  Instead, a supportive and learning environment should be the aim of youth sports.

President Pat announced that Joker Pool would be postponed for a week and adjourned the meeting early.
