October 30, 2006 Spokesman

President Steve Brown called us to order at 6:30 PM. Bill Woods was our Greeter, Cheryl Bloodworth led us in the Flag Salute, and Deborah Wakefield used our Inspirational Moment to share the poem "If" by Rudyard Kipling.  A moment well spent.

Our guests were Dr. Tom Gant, Tolga Ural, Steve DeWolfe, Jeff Bruner and Gary Moed.

Student of the Month Nick Mohazzabfar, Juanita High School, shared his thoughts about life and Rotary with us.  He's hoping to become a UW Husky next year (ed: a wise choice, IMO!).  Nick, good luck and thanks for sharing your time with us.

Birthdays:    We sang (sort of) Happy Birthday to Bill Woods and Ernie Norehad.  I think they turned 39 and 27 this month, respectively.  If anyone has corrections to this, contact Steve Shinstrom.

Student Exchange:  Elisa, our foreign exchange student, has returned home to Italy.  After thorough investigation of all possible solutions, President Steve and the Student Exchange Committee, working with District Officers, concluded this was the best solution.  President Steve would like to thank all involved for their efforts.  If any members have recommendations or would like to discuss future arrangements concerning Student Exchange, please contact Rachel Knight.

Last Saturday was the Charter Celebration at Sahalee Country Club for the new Downtown Rotary Club.  They meet on Tuesdays, 7:00 AM, at the Crab Cracker, and would love to see any of us for a makeup.

District 5030 is officially seeking Nominations for the 2009-2010 District Governor.  If you have any recommendations, please forward them to President Steve or the District Office.

Apple Cup:   Two more weeks to sign up for the Apple Cup Pool; big bucks to be won!  Go Huskies!

OPERATION WARM:     Big kudos go out to Diane Santeford and her committee for a great success at John Muir Elementary School.  They gave out coats to 150 students (hats too, Pat!) for the upcoming winter.  There were leftover coats, to be distributed by the staff at John Muir.  Diane, great job on a fantastic program- this is what Rotary is all about, making a positive impact in our community!

Alcohol Awareness:Scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 18 at 6:30 PM.  The location is Kirkland Lodge (Evan Perrollaz is exec. Director) and John Overleese will be our mentor in Whiskey and other libations.  John, will there be any Midleton Very Rare Irish Whiskey?

New Members:       Rachel Knight had the great honor of inducting our two newest members, Evan Perrollaz, executive Director of Kirkland Lodge, and Brandon Honcoop, financial man at RBC Dain Roucher.  Evan's sponsor is Ev Cox and his mentor is Steve Shinstrom.  Brandon's sponsor is Rick Ostrander and his mentor is Jack Danforth.  Welcome to Evan and Brandon!

Lindsay Palmer, director of education at the King County Sexual Assault Resource Center, was our speaker for the evening.  KCSARC is a private, nonprofit organization with services including Education, Child, Teen and Adult Therapy and Legal Advocacy.  They also run the Sexual Assault Resource Line, which can be used to report incidences AND also if you have questions on how to handle situations.  One of the main points Lindsay brought up is if you suspect something has happened or is ongoing, trust your gut and report it.  Call the Resource Line if you have questions on how to proceed.  When responding to a child victim, let them know you believe them and it's not their fault.  Call 1) CPS if it's a family member that is the offender, or 2) Law Enforcement if it's not a family member.

Everyone received handouts; please read and use as a reference.  Thank you Lindsay for your enlightening presentation and the work you do to help others.

Joanne Primavera was our Honeypot winner and donated her winnings to KCSARC.
