President Pat Dye rang the bell to begin the meeting at 6:30 PM. Carl Boruck led the members in the Pledge of Allegiance. Dan Bartel gave an inspirational moment on Rotary First Harvest, which is Rotary International's longest running project. First Harvest provides fruits and vegetables to Northwest Harvest (the food banks) that might otherwise go to waste. Our first work day at First Harvest will be Saturday, October 9 from 9 AM to Noon. Dan also announced that we will adopt two families at Thanksgiving and two at Christmas. This year President Pat is encouraging inspirational moments that relate to helping our community. President Pat thanked Terry Cole and Makaylaa Powers for greeting and Mike Hunter for being the scribe.
Visiting Rotarians and Guests: Sarah Brooks introduced Jason Wang, our new (and first time) exchange student from Taiwan. Jason gave the Club an update on his activities since his arrival. He is attending Lake Washington High School (taking science, math, and other classes) and has already visited the aquarium (thanks to Chris & Elizabeth Rusnak) and a Sounders game. Please include Jason in some of your activities. His contact information is on our website. Dan Bartel introduced Marc Hutchison and his wife, Brenda. Marc is a CPA in Kirkland. The Club recognized the return of Patty Sims, our long-time member, who has been on leave with her new baby. Announcements 1. Steve Shinstrom asked members to sign up for Scribe and Greeters for the next two months. Bunko will be on November 6 at 6:00 PM with the theme 'Black & White.' Please sign up for Bunko and bring an appetizer or dessert. 2. Patti Smith summarized the golf tournament with the announcement that the team of David DeBois, Brandon Honcoop, and Scott Rethke (and a fourth who was a ringer) won the trophy. The fourth person had the longest men's drive and Shellie Gehring the longest women's drive. Bob Webb's wife, Marion, had the closest to the pin. Patti announced that Bill Woods wins the "Monkey" because he complained before the match and besides, Bill's son originally made the Monkey. Patti thanked the many sponsors of the tournament: Banner Bank, Sterling Savings, Wealth Management and Webber Metals for the support (and golf balls!). 3. Jim Going asked for two more members to help interview Juanita High students on September 29 at Noon at the high school for Students of the Month. The interview committee will then meet at 5:15 PM next Monday (September 27) so contact Jim if you are interested in helping this vocational committee. 4. Chuck Brockway showed the group a framed Paul Harris Fellow certificate and medallion that his wife had done for him. The framing was done by Ben Franklin for $69.95. Al Hoviland (who owns a frame shop) thought that was a good price. 5. Bob Webb asked Past Presidents who are going to attend the 11:30 AM Past Presidents' lunch at the Crab Cracker next Saturday (September 25) to pay him $20 for the meal. 6. Deborah Gregorek invited members to the Lake Washington Vocational Foundation first annual breakfast on October 27. Funds raised from the breakfast will support student scholarships. Mike Roe from "Dirty Jobs" will make a video presentation as part of the breakfast. Contact Deborah if you are interested in attending. New Member Induction Brandon Honcoop introduced Sue Greenfeld to the Club and then inducted her into the Club. John Overleese is Sue's sponsor and Rachel Knight is her mentor. Sue is from the Redlands Rotary Club in California and she will hold the classification of Professor Emeritus in our Club. Be sure and sign Sue's 'Howdy Doody' chart and welcome her into our Club! Salmon BBQ Thanks President Pat thanked John Woodbery and his wife, Dee, for hosting a great Salmon Bake on August 28 at their home in Monroe. She also thanked all the volunteers who made the venue happen. Everyone had a wonderful time (except the long Hummer limo driver trying to negotiate John's tree filled driveway) and the setting was perfect! Happy Dollars Chuck Brockway did his usual excellent work obtaining Happy Dollars from the members. Highlights include John Pruett asking for sign-ups to work at the front desk in the coming weeks. Brian Tucker announcing another trip to Ethiopia in a few weeks and requesting donations of soccer balls and jerseys (and money) but no 'cleat' shoes or shin guards! John Overleese's attending his 50th high school reunion in Las Vegas (at that age no one knows or remembers anyone else!). Thanks, Chuck, for your kind and witty remarks to help us donate our Happy Dollars! Program Patti Smith introduced Cara Figgins, the vice president of Partners, a tasteful choice company. Cara gave an enlightened program about all the gourmet crackers her company makes and the many requirements dictated by the FDA on nutrition labeling. Since the end of 1992 her mother and brother have built this company into a $10 Million dollar business and now provide their cracker products in many countries around the world. Emphasis is placed on recycling, using green energy, and working with organic and natural products. Go to Costco, QFC, Metropolitan Market or Whole Foods for Paradise crackers locally. Members were provided with boxes of crackers and bags of granola. Thank you, Cara, for the program (and the goodies!). Jokers Wild Jim Going asked our guest speaker to draw a number and Bob Auslander had the winning ticket. The five of diamonds was drawn by Bob however, so the Joker remains elusive. Currently there are 44 cards left and $262 in the pot. Be sure and buy plenty of tickets next week! President Pat adjourned the meeting at 7:45 PM. Submitted by, Mike Hunter Scribe
