Announcements:
  • Patty Sims inspired us with a video of Miracle League players and buddies from 2011.  Miracle League will start again on Saturday, April 23d at 9:00 AM at Perrigo Park in Redmond.  There are 6 games this season with the last one on June 4th.  Plan on being there!
  • Bob Webb will coordinate the venues for the Duck Dash this summer.  Adoptions will be sold at the QFC in Kirkland and Totem Lake, Fred Meyer, and the Farmers Market Wednesday afternoons at Marina Park.  All members should plan on selling at least two times so we are publicizing Rotary in the community.
  • Dave DeBois has the coupons ready for the Duck Adoptions, our favorites are still there plus some new ones.
  • President Rich announced the next Board Meeting on Wednesday, April 13 at 5:30 PM at his office in Kirkland
  • The Past Presidents’ Breakfast meeting will be held at Rich’s home on Sunday morning at 9:30 AM.  RSVP to Rich so there will be enough Swedish pancakes for everyone!

Happy Dollars
Scott Becker collected lots of Happy Dollars.  Alice & Al have returned from Hawaii and we are happy to have them back!
Paul Harris Fellowship Presentation
Scott Becker honored his father, Hugo, with a Paul Harris Fellowship!  Scott’s father is going to move to Edmond, Oklahoma soon and he was very pleased to receive this honor.
Program
Jason introduced Tom Reeves, an employee of Terra Power located in Bellevue.  Tom is a graduate of Columbia in Mechanical Engineering.
Tom informed us that Terra Power is rethinking the role of nuclear power and developing a new type of nuclear plant to generate electricity.  As our planet increases to 9 million people the increase in electrical use is expected to be 93%.  China has 17 nuclear plants in operation now and 30 more under construction.  In the U.S. 20% of our electrical needs comes from nuclear plants.  It’s possible that the nuclear waste now stored at several sites could be used in this new type of nuclear plant.  The new nuclear plant will be sodium cooled and denoted by the name “Traveling Wave Reactor.”  Terra Power hopes to have a prototype by the mid-2020’s and commercial plants in operation in the 2030’s.
Thanks, Tom, for an interesting program.
