The April 28, 2014 Rotary Club of Kirkland meeting was called to order by President John Pruitt approximately at 6:15PM.   Bill Taylor served as greeter, Rick Walter checking us all in, Bill Woods led us in the Pledge of our sacred honor to the flag of our great nation, and yours truly as Scribe.  The inspirational message from Rich Bergdahl was a report of the Chuck Brockway memorial service on Saturday April 26, 2014 at Holy Spirit Lutheran Church. The testimonies about Chuck, his life of service and the love he demonstrated to others was evident in the report.  Especially moving was the testimony of his wife Vicky who thanked everyone for loving Chuck's memory with their attendance.  Many Kirkland Rotarians were in attendance.

Jim Going introduced his guest, Fred Gorrell from the Paradise Valley Rotary Club who is an FAA Examiner.  His claim to recognition is a helium balloon trip record with Guinness, the record people not the "stout" people for crossing the continental US from Costa Mesa, CA to Savannah, GA in, if I heard him right, 43 hours  Wondering how this was possible, I asked him and he said, "the jet stream at up to 28,000 elevation was at times carrying him at 75 miles per hour.

Also introduced were Cindy and Dave Smith, parents of Iveyanne Smith our student of the month.  She disclosed something about her not many know and she said her middle name is Jellybean.  I asked her mother  she selected the name Iveyanne and she said there was a Drug Emporium commercial years ago that had a cute little girl in it with a voice calling out "Iveyanne, Iveyanne".  She liked the commercial and the name and borrowed it. I reminded her that names, no matter where they come from are eventually a reflection of who you are, not the other way around.  Iveyanne is a good example of that maxim.

Iveyanne thanked Kirkland Rotarians for the month and reported on her high school activities such as her devotion to the "Anti Bullying" project, serving as officers in Key Club and Beta Club with service to the community one of her passions.  We get it!  She will attend the UW next fall. The Huskies will be the better for her presence. Brandon Honcoop presented her certificate, check to Northwest Harvest in her name and a 4-Way Test plaque to keep in memory of our association.

Joanne Primavera reported on the District Conference in Vancouver, BC, just recently attended where the main speaker was Craig Kielburger who leads a Free the Children program. Next year the District Conference is closer to home at Tulalip.

Pat Dye who is moving permanently to Boise, Idaho, announced a need for the chair of the Warm Coat project next year. We will miss you Pat.

Happy Dollars collected by Rick Walter reflected plenty of happiness.  A sample included happy that Bill Woods is back for the summer, golf outings "forced" on Harry by his brother-in-law, Brian Tucker  that our sponsored  Scott Troop is 10 years old and thriving, daughter in college,  Terry Cole's new marriage celebrated with a wedding ring that inside has inscribed, "I love you now put it back on", Jerry Campo something about the Boston marathon being safe this year, Dave Dubois and wife to warm New Orleans (humid too my friend), Patti Smith's Hawaii trip with a "pets gone wild" anecdote, Bill Taylor for a great fishing trip to Barkley Sound with 15-16 foot seas (go figure) but limits of everything that swims, apparently, Anne Hamilton for something I could not hear across the room, Rich  highly recommends Miracle League, Steve Shinstrom's 105 MPH trip with his boys and Brandon Honcoop's boys night out because his wife got a girls night out.  What a haul of happy dollars, keep up the happiness members!

Jason Overlease introduced our Speaker for the evening, Jimmy Hue who has made a business out of consulting with small and large businesses to turn efficiency with energy to profits for the clients and him.  The business is called "Distributed Energy Management".  He says that when you plug a cord into a socket you are really getting access to energy.  On average, 61% of energy, which is invisible, is wasted of which 30% is coal powered.  He counsels clients to see that investing in energy efficient equipment will turn that waste into the client's profit.  For commercial office space nation wide that wasted energy costs somebody $50 billion.  Saving  6% a year for 6 years can lead to a 30% return on reinvestments for energy efficient equipment at 30% compounded.

There were several questions such as  why Washington has coal powered plants? (A: PSE uses it from Montana where it is produced) and how to select which LED bulbs? (A:  light is a spectrum so pick yellow; white light shows red so , use a red apple as a test (hard to understand that one)

Anne Hamilton presented our latest Paul Harris Fellows:
Dwight Olson (plus 8 pin)
Rick Walter (his first with certificate, medal and pin) Bill Taylor (Plus 8 pin) Don Dicks (Plus 4 pin) Bill Woods (Plus 4 pin) Each Rotarian, who were artistically arranged in order of increasing height from Don Dicks to Rick Walter) expressed their passion for giving to Rotary international Foundations work against Polio Plus and other projects.

Rick Walter conducted Joker Pool, drawing Jerry Campo's lucky ticket who unluckily drew a non joker card for only $10.00.  Maybe a good investment because Rotary projects win every time.

The meeting concluded and was adjourned by President Pruitt thanking all for all and to all a good night.
