President Rachel Knight called the meeting to order at 6:40

 

President Rachel did the inspirational moment herself.  It was around the fact that talent is not an accident of birth. She used Mr. Suzuki who did many wonderful things in Japan including the creation of the Suzuki method of training people on the violin that is still used world wide.

            Ray Graham, Felicity's incomparable mom visiting from S. Africa

            Gail Auslander, the wife of Bob who loves to attend our meetings. She attends more than many of our regular members!

            Theresa Lindo, Exec Director of Eastside Baby Corner.

 

Announcements:

1)       Bill Woods brought a golf trophy dated from 1953. It was instituted by Bill Bolger who was one of the founding fathers of Kirkland Rotary. Bill found it when clearing out some of the boxes from his move. He requested permission to donate it to the Historical Society of Kirkland

2)       Theresa Lindo from Eastside Baby Corner thanked us for being a supporter of this Eastside non-profit that manages with an all volunteer crew to distribute 4 Million pounds of baby supplies to low income families i.e. baby food, diapers, etc. She was there to thank us for helping fund 66 booster chairs with drop down cup holders.talk about a Seattle kind of Baby!

3)       Ray Graham.is she the "Unsinkable Molly Brown of S. Africa" ..Inspired us about how she is walking in her husband's shoes. She praised the Rotarians in her area who work like tigers.  She pointed out in particular the project " Operation Medical Hope". She informed us that S.Africa is second only to Indian in the incidence of AIDS.  The people of her area experience a funeral every weekend due to this disease. 4 groups in the States &  2 in England have adopted it as a project. A filled container with supplies for the big AIDS clinic was received from them.it even had free shipping.

4)       Alice Volpe is in charge of Rotary Cares so please let her know when one among us needs a little caring

 

 

Speaker:

            Joanne Primavera introduced the Executive Director of CARE, Mary Jo Gordon. The goal of CARE is  to  raise awareness, educate and prevent cardiac arrhythmia and Sudden Heart attacks.

It is much more prevalent in young people than leukemia.3x more common.

            The first symptom for 50% is sudden death.

            What are some of the symptoms?

                        Unexplained fainting

                        Seizures

                        Shortness of Breath

                        Chest Pain

            How diagnose?

                        ECG (Only costs $11 for doctor to administer!)

                        24 hr monitor

                        Stress Test

                        Investigate Family History-50% chance of inheriting

If diagnosed is very curable with use of medications, pacemaker, implanted defibrillator

What can we do?

            Have current CPR/AED certification

            Be aware of Family History

            Have AED's easily accessible at work, schools, churches, gyms

            Be screened for possibility

            Insist on Schools screening with ECG

            Educate Representatives about

            Check for what is on PreParticipant Sports physicals
