December 22, 2005

President Joanne Primavera called us to order at 6:30 pm.  We were inspired to give a problem, that has lingered or persisted through 2005, up as we observe the Winter Solstice, December 21st.  It has now passed but you can still pause for reflection and give a problem away, no need to carry it into 2006.
Announcements:

President Joanne Primavera:

Presented a Paul Harris Fellow to Bill Woods
Recapped the memorial service for Gen Cox, wife of Rotarian Everly Cox that was held Friday, December 16th.  It was a beautiful and loving tribute to a life well lived.

Felicity Burdick:

John Overleese:
Duck Dash sponsorship packages, please let him know of any sponsorship candidates

George MacAfee:
Gifts, donated items think outside the box.  Looking to collect new and innovative items this year.  Donors will get an opportunity to share information about their business at a Rotary meeting.

Julien Hoisington - classification talk:
Financial Advisor with First Horizon Bank.  Julien shared that Rotary is "aging" him as he no longer gets mistaken as the "Student of the Month".  He is a local guy!  Attended Lakeview Elementary school, Bellevue H.S., and Whitman College.  Has worked in telecommunications for several years for prior to moving into Mortgage Banking, which he loves.  He has a passion for local involvement and is an Ambassador with the Kirkland Chamber and plans to be an active member of Rotary.  His beautiful girlfriend, Katie, we met at the recent holiday party.

A Rolicking, Frolicking, Happy Dollars:
Led by our esteemed, Steve Brown and Chuck Brockway, Rotarians were in rare form sharing their Happy Dollars and Christmas plans.  Highlights include:  Steve Brown expressing his excitement over the approval of his board for next year.  He is thrilled.   Jim Feek orating another Ole "yoke", watch out for the "Ham Bush".   Bob Gassen expressed his heartfelt appreciation for being part of such a terrific group, Kirkland Rotary.  Scott Becker, let us know that Annie has turned 4.  How did that happen?  While Steve was whisking dollars away, Chuck Brockway, similarly filled in the missing gaps on the "Apple Cup" pool.

Apple Cup pool winners?
John Ulvila, Dwight Olson, Rotary First Harvest

Speaker:
Our own, Dr. Don Saul, presented information, powerpoint slide show handout, on the funding of the Lake Washington School District and the importance of the upcoming levy, February 7th.  Startling information included that Lake Washington School district, while one of the most affluent districts in the state, ranks 268th out of 296th in the state in operating expenditures. He attempted to clear up some misconceptions over how property is assessed and monies collected per the levy.  Ours is a fixed dollar levy, thus there is no increase in monies based on increasing house values.  Taxes do not rise because of increased house values.  Dr. Saul was limited in time due to the pre-speaker merrymaking but the issue was clearly of importance and drew many more questions than there was time to answer.  Dr. Saul said he would be happy to return to the next meeting to answer these questions.  In addition you can send questions, thoughts to him at dsaul@lwsd.org

Honey Pot:
John Ulvila wins again!

Special Raffle - $180 raised in a special raffle.  The money raised was divided amongst the three families who are receiving gift baskets from the club.  The raffled items was a 5 lb. Dilettante Chocolate Santa which was won by Jim Feek and then generously given to our exchange student, Vlad.  Eyeballs were popping out of their sockets at the Kehrli household when that chocolate santa was carried into the house.

Merry Christmas everyone.  Sorry, for the delay on these notes, the presence of a ravenous teenager and must do/see holiday activities wreak havoc on my orderly schedule.  :)

Recorded and embellished by,
Katherine Kehrli
