The February 9, 2009 Kirkland Rotary meeting was called to order by President-Elect Jim Feek, in the absence of President  Bob Webb, at 6:30.  Greeter was Roy Selvidge. The Pledge of Allegiance was lead by Felicity Burdick.

The Inspirational Moment was offered by Eric Olsen, who explained that he has made every mistake in the book regarding Valentine's Day.  In order to avoid future mistakes, he offered these ideas:

1.       Give your wife a gift on YOUR birthday.

2.       Put a love note in her book or her brief case.

3.       Give her a bottle of Champagne

4.       Revive chivalry - hold her chair, open the door for her, hold her coat.

5.       Kidnap her, blindfold her, and take her to her favorite restaurant.

6.       Buy her a complete new outfit.  You can get it done really quickly, and you'll have the rest of the day to play golf or go fishing.

7.       Never stop dating, no matter how long you've been together.

Pat Swenson introduced prospective member Scott Rethke, back for his 5th + visit.  [I know I'm getting old when one of my son's friends shows up in a suit, as a prospective member.]

Pascal introduced his host dad, David Marcus [Sp?]

Pascal went to LakeWenatchee and had fun.  Went ice skating on a lake near by, inner tubing on the snow, and had roasted marshmallows and s'mores around a campfire.

Carl Myers - Student of the Month from Lake WashingtonHigh School.  He spoke about some of his community service activities.

Katherine Kehrli was serenaded on her birthday.  [The question on everyone's lips - why is she here???  Rumor has it, Tim is out of town.]

Jim Feek, and others read the Announcements:

There is a special Rotary Viewing of the 'Lucy' Exhibit at the PacificScienceCenter.

Don't forget, everyone needs to participate in making a donation to The Rotary International Foundation every year.

There is space for two more couples at the Valentine's Day dinner Saturday.

Rotary First Harvest this Saturday between 9 and 12.  We will carpool at 8AM from the NE 70th Park & Ride lot.  Remember, the location is now in Kent.  Bring gloves, bring a friend.

Steve Brown did his usual sterling Job as Chancellor; there were a lot of very happy members.  He did such a good job that he was presented with a commemorative Rose Bowl cap, in honor of USC's trouncing of Penn State, who really seemed to have forgotten that they were there to play football.

Patti Smith introduced our speaker for the evening, George Ray of KCTS Channel 9.  She informed us that he has been at Channel 9 for 33 years; previously he replaced Keith Jackson as the sportscaster at KOMO.

Mr. Ray mentioned that Seattle 4 Rotary raised $5,000,000 for the new KCTS headquarters building.  He also mentioned that opinion polls have revealed that PBS has a great reputation in the public mind.  He also spoke about some of the new programming on the horizon, and about the upcoming conversion to digital TV.  He reminded us that if we want to buy a new digital TV, to be sure to get one that is High Definition.  Not all digital TVs are HD.

He also spoke about VCR tapes - they will deteriorate over time, so if you have important stuff on them, transfer them to DVD.

Mr. Ray informed us that KCTS's debts have been paid off

Pascal had the winning number, but alas, did not draw the winning duck.

Jim Feek closed the meeting with a huge surprise - he told a joke that was hilarious.

The meeting was adjourned about 7:30PM.

Respectfully submitted,

David Aubry, Acting Scribe
