The meeting was called to order by Vice President Rachel Knight at 6:15pm.

Katherine Kehrli led the flag salute.

Dennis Newell provided the inspirational moment for the meeting.  His topic

was "youth," which he described as a "quality of the imagination."  "Whether

100 or 16," he quoted, "there can be in everybody a sense of wonder."

Pat Dye led off the introductions.  The theme of the meeting was "family

night" and we were introduced to many of the members' families

(unfortunately, too many to list).

There were several important announcements:

January 24th's board meeting will be moved from 5PM to 4PM.  The location

has not changed.

Brian Tucker's daughter, Maddy, will be back to sell Girl Scout cookies

again next week.  "Maddy Tucker can take orders before the Jan. 22 meeting to send Girl Scout Cookies to soldiers in Iraq for Operation Cookie Drop.  Donations are $4 per box.  Cookies will be shipped in late March.  She can also take orders by phone at 425 822 0507."

Rotary will again be represented in this year's Kirkland spelling bee on

February 28th.  Good luck to them all!

Rich Bergdahl reminded us about the Rotary Ski Trip on the 26th, which

leaves at 4PM on Friday.  He urged everyone to get there around 3:30PM.

Pat Swenson reminded everyone about the upcoming Talent Show.  Talent or

not, Rotarians are encouraged to show their stuff on February 12th.

March 10th will be another much-anticipated "Alcohol Awareness."  It will

be $15 per person and held at the Kirkland Lodge.

March 15th will have a "St. Patrick's Day" theme and will be hosted at the

Auslanders' home.

The foundation Auction will occur on April 14th.

Pat Dye introduced the "speaker:" The Amazing William.  William is a

magician from the Pike Place magic store.  The Amazing William put on quite

a show for young and old alike.  William performed such feats as flipping a

magic card, "hypnotizing" a balloon so that he could poke it with a needle

without it popping, and turning two strands of rope into one.  William did a

good job of involving the kids into his presentations and keeping the mood

light and upbeat.  For his last performance, the Amazing William, aided by

cohort Brett Johnson, pulled a piece of rope "through" the midsection of an

astonished (and relieved) Pat Dye.

Yours in Rotary,

Julien Hoisington

For those wanting to read the inspirational moment here it is:

Youth

Youth is a time of life; it's a state of mind.  It is not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips and supple knees; it is an attitude, a quality of the imagination, a vigor of the emotions.  Youth means a predominance of courage over timidity, a preference for adventure over love of ease.  Years wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul.  Whether 100 or 16, there can be in every being's heart a sense of wonder, the sweet amazement at the stars, the challenge of new events, childlike curiosity, and the joy of living.  You are as young as your faith, as old as your doubt, as young as your self confidence, as old as your fear, as young as your hope, as old as your despair.  So long as your heart is warmed by the messages of beauty, hope, cheer, courage and meaning of life, you will remain young.

May youth be forever yours.
