The Kirkland Rotary Club meeting of January 5, 2009 began at 6:40 p.m. and was led by President, Bob Webb.

Guests :  Steve Shinstrom introduced Scott Rethke, a financial planner, for the second time.  Jim Styner was present will be inducted next Monday along with Mekonen Giorgis, who wasn't present.  Elizabeth Rusnak introduced her husband, Chris, who really didn't need to be introduced.

 

Pascal Kunz had a great holiday.  He is really glad it snowed but hasn't been skiing yet.  He has all the gear except a size 11 snow pair of ski boots.  If anyone has a spare pair, please let Steve Shinstrom or Pascal know.  Pascal went to Yakima with Patty Sims and her family for Christmas.  He changed host families and is staying with Janine and Dave Marcus, who are friends of Geoff Owen, District Youth Exchange Officer.  It is my understanding they might be interested in becoming members (if asked).

 

Announcements :  Rick Ostrander, Patti Smith, Francois Daumard and Steve Shinstrom are celebrating birthdays in January.  Eric Olson, Gary Schuster, Tom Gant, Dan Bartel, and Brad Green joined the Rotary Club of Kirkland in a January in some unknown year.

 

Pat Swenson - Reading Buddies start again.  Pat would like new Buddies.  Let her know at pat.swenson@comcast.net if you would like to work with elementary age children.

 

Rick Ostrander (and Alice Volpe)  There will be a sign up sheet next week for Rotarians and their significant others to attend at night on January 31at the Ostrander's playing all types of Board games, including Candyland for those who are game challenged.

 

Put the second Saturday in February and April on your calendar to go with other Rotarians to Northwest Harvest in Kent. 

 

GG Getz - February 1 from noon to 2:00 p.m.will be a going away party at Heritage Hall for our beloved Chuck Morgan.  Chuck is moving to Wenatchee to be closer to his son.

 

Bob Webb gave special thanks to Dick Westin for the very successful bell ringing for Salvation Army at the Park Place QFC.

 

January 19 at 6:00 p.m. - the regular meeting will be at the Wilde Rover for a social gathering (and a little business).  No meeting at the Woodmark.  Bring friends who might like to join Rotary.

 

Program :

Doug Hanson talked about the causes of global warming.  He said that he has studied he effects of carbon dioxide on the atmosphere and there is no scientific proof that humans are causing global warming.

 

Diana Lanspa bought the lucky ticket for the honeypot but unsuccessfully drew the wrong duck.  The meeting was adjourned at 7:45 P.M.
