Madame President Rachel Knight called her initial meeting to order promptly at 6:30, a terrific start.  Pat Swenson led the flag salute and John Overleese gave some very inspirational thoughts on "class".  He suggested class is made up of 1) how and what you say, 2) how you look and act, (and 3) which I missed writing down 1 & 2). He concluded that our past president and our new president are good examples of "class".

Rachel's first act was to honor Steve for his terrific job this last year.  The members assembled agreed enthusiastically.

Visiting Rotarians and Guests:      Jodi Kauer, President of the Federal Way Sunrise Club and her Rotarian husband, joined us.  They have moved to Issaquah and will be making up at "the only evening meeting in the area often".  Marian Webb graced yours truly by coming to here the super program below.

Announcements :

  • Sinclair Jones has resigned from the club as he and Donna have moved to Trilogy in Redmond and driving here in rush hour is too difficult.
  • Rachel reminded us of the 60% attendance rule and how easy it is to satisfy that minimum requirement.  Makeups can be recorded when we sign in for regular meetings, bring the paper from the other club, participate in club committee meetings, or just send Jeanne an email
  • Jim Feek circulated a signup for a Kirkland Rotary Dance Club.  Jim envisions a gathering at a dance studio in Kirkland on a monthly or every other month basis and would love to hear of your interest.
  • Gary Bruner announced the annual Salmon Bake.  It will again be at Bob & Carolyn Norman's beautiful home.  The date is August 6, and Gary is requesting worker bees sign up with him.
  • John Woodbery gave an update on Ken Hollingsworth.  After having a very large benign tumor removed from his abdomen, Ken developed bad blood clots in his legs and needed more procedures to treat them.  He is back home after this second hospitalization and is convalescing.

The Grand Prize

Huber and Laura Cooney were introduced to the assembly by Francois.  They are close friends of Francois and bought the winning Duck Dash Tickets.  They are going to have their first child in November and since the darling won't be able to drive for a while they decided to take the money to apply to diapers etc.  Huber and Francois shared the hour or so it took for Huber to decide Francois was not kidding about his win.

The Past President's Parting Shot

After last Monday's wonderful luau, Steve realized he had one Distinguished Service Award still on the table.  Tonight he recognized Tom Sturgell for his outstanding contributions in the past year.  In addition to his steadfast efforts as the webmaster (and teacher) of our Clubrunner website, he put together the club roster "blue book" that so many have been requesting during the last several years.  This was a tremendous job and the club is indebted to Tom.  So the lovely plaque has found its rightful home. (Also, his work on all the record keeping of the Duck Dash has been a blessing to me over many years.  Bob)

Continuing the theme of John O's inspiration on "class", Steve also felt he had to comment on classy dress at meetings.  He asked Ernie Norehad to stand showing his classy walking shorts and asked Ernie,  "Ernie, Are those shorts you're wearing, or are you riding a chicken?"

Program :

Andrea Peterson is the National Teacher of the Year.  She won this honor by a national competition last spring, was introduced to the American population by President Bush in Washington, and will postpone her classroom teaching for the next year traveling as a spokesman nationally and internationally for the teaching profession.  Andrea gave an inspirational talk on the "new 3 R's of education" Rigor, Relevance, and Relationship".  For more info please see a press release I circulated.

Honey Pot :  The evening ended with Joanne Primavera having the lucky ticket. Unfortunately, only a clear marble was forthcoming.

The meeting was adjourned at 7:35 PM.
