Rotary Minutes:  July 21, 2008

President-Elect Jim Feek called the meeting to order at 6:30 pm.  I did not capture the name of the person who led the Pledge - my apologies for this oversight.  John Overleese shared with the Club the remarks he had made at Ev Cox's funeral on Saturday, July 12th.

He spoke of Ev as being part of the Greatest Generation, and shared some of those things that make up Ev's legacy.  Ev had been a Navy pilot, flying PBY's during WWII.  He was also a respected educator, teaching and serving as principal in the Lake WashingtonSchool District.  He also left behind 2 children who continue to contribute to the world.  John also spoke of the legacy he left for our exchange students, sharing with them the Naval Base at Whidbey Island.  Ev had 34 years of perfect attendance at Kirkland Rotary.  He will be missed.  Thanks to John for sharing Ev's story so eloquently.

$46,000.  Dan also shared some of the history of the Duck Dash, and how in the

all of the printing free of charge.

  • Rick Ostrander announced that the Wrap Up/Sponsor Thank You party will be at  Bergdahl's on July 24th.

Patti Smith then introduced our guest speaker, Laurie Todd.  Laurie is known as the "Insurance Warrior", and has written a book entitled Fight Your Health Insurer and Win - Secrets of the Insurance Warrior.  She shared her personal story of being diagnosed, and misdiagnosed, with cancer and her subsequent battle with the insurance company for coverage of the proper treatment.  We enjoyed her references to Dr. Two Good Years, and Dr. No Outcomes.  After successfully negotiating the minefield of the insurance industry, Laurie received the treatment needed and is now cancer free.  She began to share her strategies with others, and finally realized that she had enough information to literally fill a book.  It was then that she decided to help more people wage their own insurance warrior battles by writing the above book as a guide to assist others.  Her presentation was then followed by a brief Q&A.  Laurie stressed that she liked to think of herself as a "peaceful warrior."  You can visit her website at www.theinsurancewarrior.com .

Honeypot:  Rick Carlson, our visitor from Tucson, held the winning raffle ticket, but the bag of little duckies was missing in action.

The meeting was adjourned at 7:30 pm.
