Program:  Dr. Maxine Hayes presented a great talk on Bird Flu.  Dr. Hayes is the State Health Officer for the Washington State Department of Health.  She advises the Governor and the Department of Health Secretary on issues ranging from emergency responses to such outbreaks as pandemic flu to preventing childhood illnesses.  Her main goal for this presentation is for people to be aware and informed about bird flu.  She stated we do not have Avian flu virus in the United States.  Avian flu is carried by wild aquatic birds.  Avian flu virus if found in birds in 48 different countries.  There is a risk with migratory birds, not a threat to us until it becomes humanized.  People who have died from this virus have had very close contact with the birds.  Washington is a probable place for an outbreak in the US due to its proximity to Asia.  The Northwest (Vancouver, BC; Seattle, and Portland) has 42, 000 people per week arriving here from Asia.  We are constantly preparing for an outbreak and being monitored by the CDC.  Different ways to protect ourselves 1.  Get seasonal flu shots- we will do better with optimal health   2.  If 65 or older, get the pneumococcal vaccine  3.  Cover you cough.

Honeypot:  Mike Hunter had the winning ticket but was not successful.
