President Brandon opened the Kirkland Rotary meeting at 6:35 and called on Rich Bergdahl for inspiration, who in turn introduced Jason Overleese. Jason, who has moved to Kirkland from Santa Fe and is working for New York Life, passed along a message from his mom thanking Kirkland Rotary for its contribution to the new Cancer Center at Evergreen Hospital in John's name.

Rick Ostrander introduced Charlotte Cronenweth, our Student of the Month from Lake Washington High School. Other guests included Ingrid Bruner and Chris Griffith from the "other" Kirkland Rotary Club.

  • Chuck Brockway announced that there will be another Miracle League game this Saturday, at Perrigo Field, in Redmond. He asked for volunteers to arrive at 9:30 a.m.

  • President Brandon announced that there will be a board meeting this Wednesday at the Conover Building.

  • Anne Hamilton announced that she needs volunteers to purchase and deliver food to our needy families at John Muir Elementary School this Friday. She also said that there are plenty of funds to purchase the food and that all that is needed is for someone to purchase the items and deliver them to the school.
Our Foundation Chair, Don Dicks, reported that our club is currently at 65% towards our goal of 100% giving to every Rotarian Every Year. He and Mr. Brockway collected a generous sum from Rotarians as  a donation to get us the rest of the way, there. He then called Pat Dye and Bob Webb to the front and awarded them Paul Harris Fellow awards; Pat with her first and Bob, his PH+3.

Brian tucker introduced Dr. Omara Benjamin Abe, who moved to the US in the 1960's from Gulu, Uganda. He is Chairman and Founder of the African Chamber of Commerce of the Pacific Northwest and a member of the University District Rotary Club. Dr. Abe began his work with rotary in 1995 and is active in Ethiopia and other parts of Africa immunizing for Polio. He has also delivered 800 wheelchairs to victims of Polio in Uganda. His other projects  include building houses for villagers, having been displaced by the government

There was $3,200 in the Joker Pool and Eric had the winning ticket but, alas, he did not pick the Joker. President Brandon Adjourned the meeting at 7:40.

A message from past student of the month Suejean Hwangpo:

Thank you so much for being so kind to me during my time at the Rotary Club as the Student of the Month! I would like to update everybody with my final college decision of the University of Washington. I was accepted into the Honors Program and I am greatly looking forward to opening the newest chapter of my life there! Since I will be staying close to home, I will try and come back to attend another Rotary Club meeting. I really enjoyed my time at the dinners and the vivacity with which everyone spoke with when it came to the many humanitarian activities that the Rotary Club took on :)

On another note, this year in Loyalty (a community service club I am involved in at Lake Washington High School), I am helping save lives from cancer by taking part in the American Cancer Society Relay For Life on Saturday, May 12, and I am hoping you will support me. Each of us has our own reasons for caring about the fight against cancer, but it seems that we all know someone who has personally battled this disease.

My team of 24 service-minded students and I have set a goal to raise at least $100 per person. Currently I'm only $60 from reaching my goal. I have sent this email to 8 individuals in hope to receive $20 from each person, but any donation you can make, large or small, will help me reach my fundraising goal and helps us reach the greater goal of saving lives from cancer!

Please use the link below to visit my personal web page to make a secure, tax-deductible online donation to the American Cancer Society. You can make a one-time gift, or increase your impact by donating monthly!

If you could forward this to any other Rotary Club members, that would be greatly appreciated! Though my goal is set at $100, I am hoping to go beyond that and raising as much as I can. Thank you and I will keep you updated on my progress!

Sincerely,
Suejean Hwangpo
