Rotary Minutes for November 27, 2017—Scribe Pat Swenson

President Steve Shinstrom called the meeting to order at 6:30 p.m.  John Pruitt lead us in the flag salute.  Steve thanked Dan Bartel for greeting and Scott Becker, Don Dicks for handling the front desk.  Guests for the night were introduced:  Madie Colanses (Student of the Month), her parents, Pete and Carin, and her brother, Peter.  Joe Getz, visiting for the first time.  Visiting Rotarian:  Doug Seto, from Seattle Four.

Madie thanked everyone for selecting her as Student of the Month and told us about herself.  This is her last meeting with our group.  She focused on the things that are unique about her.  She is a 5th year Spanish student, which she loves.  She watches several TV shows in Spanish to help  improve her local usage of Spanish.  Her future plans include studying languages with a hope to become a linguist for the FBI.  Madie also enjoys writing and has won several national awards for her short stories.
Announcements:  Our Christmas Party is December 11th.  If you have not done so and wish to attend, please let Steve know for the final count for the restaurant.  December 16th, Saturday, is our annual Kids Christmas breakfast, shopping, wrapping and a picture with Santa event.  Please come and help with any of the activities to make the party a success.  Dan Bartel will be Santa and he has recruited two elves to help.  Further details are to follow.  Club Board Meeting will be December 14th.  District Conference will be April 27-29 2018

In celebration of Rotary International Foundation Month, several members received Paul Harris pins.  Don Dicks, Rick Ostrander, Brandon Honcoop, Alice Volpe, Alan Hoviland, Steve Shinstom.  President Steve asked each person to tell how long they have been in Rotary and what made them join.  Many of these members had parents or grandparents that were Rotarians.

Our Speaker for the evening was Dave Nichols from Shelter Box.  Dave is a West Seattle Rotarian who spent a year training to be a Shelter Box Response Team Member volunteer.  There are 2 people on each team with 150 people participating worldwide.  Dave’s contact information:  Dave@disasterdave.com   (206) 391-5017.

Shelter Box is an International Rotary Project Partner.  Response Team members have been deployed over 230 times to 90 countries since 2001.  They have sheltered over 1.5 million people from 2000 to 2017.  There are currently 85 million more people displaced in the world now.

There are 4 types of shelter boxes and each is tailored to the specific disaster.  The typical box includes tented shelter, blankets and groundsheets, solar lights, cooking utensils, water purification equipment, a tool kit, mosquito nets and children’s activity packs.  A response team is activated and aid is moved as close as possible to the disaster site.  Aid is then transported by any means available, by truck, boat, camel, sled or by hand.  Response teams work with the local community to identify the most vulnerable to receive aid first.
ShelterBox USA is a 501(c)3 nonprofit that relies on private donations to provide emergency shelter to disaster survivors worldwide.  Our Club donated $8,500 last year to ShelterBox.
