September brings cooler weather and the return to school for our community's children. It also signals a shift from the dangers of heat to the dangers of cold for the unsheltered in the Kirkland community. In September, the club heard from city and county leaders directly involved in the design and delivery of services to the homeless.

Mallory Van Abbema of the King County Regional Homeless Authority introduced Rotarians to the Authority's efforts in East King County. Then, Jen Boone of the city of Kirkland's Human Services Division described for Rotarians the city's homelessness outreach and support offerings. The two presentations were designed to illuminate for club members the various layers and coordination of activities and services provided through county and city governments, which supports Rotary's commitment to service in the Greater Kirkland community.
