Kirkland Rotary Minutes November 19, 2007

Felicity Burdick greeted one and all, Bob Norman led us in the Pledge, and Bob Webb inspired us with encouraging words for The Rotary Foundation (TRF), including an apt recipe for happiness with great ingredients possible from being an active Rotarian.

Bud Saxbury (University Club) and Dick Carlson (Tucson) were visiting Rotarians joining us.  Victor Yang (sp?) was a guest of Gary Bruner.

President Rachel recognized a plethora of Rotary Anniversaries: Rick Ostrander (28 years!), Alan Barer (21!), Kevin Ritola (7), Rich Bergdahl (6), Elizabeth Kemmish (4), Linda Julien (4), Don Dicks (3), Diane Santeford (2) and Vernel Sutherland (2).  Congrats to all!

Dick Westin announced that he still needs help on Saturday 12/8 and 12/15 for 2 hour shifts ringing the donation bell for the Salvation Army at the Parkplace QFC.  Please contact him and sign up!

Elizabeth Rusnak asked for more volunteers to help with community immunizations on Thursday December 6 at the Bridle Trails Hopelink.  Contact Elizabeth to sign up for that.

Bob Webb is forming his to-be-proposed slate of officers and Directors for the '08-'09 Rotary year.  If you'd like to be involved in a specific part of the club's activities, please contact him.

Alice Volpe passed around the sign up for the Holiday Party at the Heathman Hotel on December 9.  Sign up on ClubRunner or contact Alice.

Jim Feek and Rich Bergdahl gave us a current report on our Rotary Foundation giving.  9 of us have already contributed $100 or more each prior to tonight.  IF you contribute between now and December 31, Rich will match each $100 of yours with $10 of his own.  As well, Jim will allocate 100 TRF "recognition points" to you for every $100 you donate.  They handed out a great primer on the on-line TRF tools available to you.  First go to ClubRunner ( www.kirklandrotary.org ), log in, and get your member number from your profile.  Then you'll use it on the TRF website ( https://riweb.rotaryintl.org ) to set up your account.  Our District is 5030, and our club is 120.  Once there you can navigate to see your TRF giving history and make contributions online.

Our speaker for the evening was PDG Harv Jubie from Marysville (District 5050).  Harv is an amazingly dedicated and knowledgeable advocate for TRF.  He gave us a few facts, such as TRF began in 1917, and between 1947 and 2006 took in donations of $1.7B!!  2006 alone saw $92.5M!  Harv had a great visual presentation of 7 Rotary gears successively mounted on his easel board.  His 7 points of TRF for us to remember are those historical donations, the Matching Grants, Polio Plus, Educational Programs such as Group Study Exchanges and Ambassadorial Scholarships, District and International Grants, and finally our contributions tonight!  Each one made Harv's Rotary gears turn and what a great display!  Thank you for a great program, Harv.

Chuck Brockway filled out the Apple Cup donation board, and then collected Happy Dollars from the masses.  It was a happy day in Huskyville as the Dawgs sorta bit the Cal Bears in the provervbial behind and those Cougs were absolutely "gnawed" up by the beavers :-) (editor editorial)

Dave Aubry had the lucky ticket, and then guessed the lucky duck to take home $30!  A much better result than Saturday's debacle on Montlake.  Cheryl Bloodworth then won a Gary Payton rubber duck (really).
