Current needs for foster care in our community

Dr. Cheryl E. Haskins is a nonprofit executive, author, and consultant with more than 17 years of leadership experience serving children and families in Washington State. She is the Executive Director of City Ministries in Kirkland, where she oversees a range of programs including foster care services, affordable housing for foster families, and educational initiatives designed to strengthen communities. Through its partnership with the State of Washington, City Ministries has helped more than 150 children find stability through reunification with their families, adoption, or other permanent placements, while maintaining an exceptional record of children not returning to the foster care system. The organization also developed Rose Hill Cottages, a residential community designed to support foster families and provide stable housing in the Kirkland area. Dr. Haskins holds an MBA and a Doctorate in Ministry and Leadership and regularly advises nonprofit organizations on governance, strategic planning, and sustainable growth. Dr. Haskins is also a proud recipient of the Lakeland Rotary Youth Achievement Award. |

Sarah Olson serves as the Kirkland Public Works Deputy Director of Engineering, Planning and Development Services. In this role, Sarah supports developing a safer transportation system, resilient and healthy surface water management, advancing policies to strengthen utilities, and fostering safe private development to support Kirkland’s growth and sustainability goals. She oversees coordination with the I-405 Improvement projects, NPDES Permit compliance, and implementation of the Transportation and Surface Water Strategic Plans. With more than 25 years in public service, Sarah prioritizes community engagement and environmental resilience, ensuring our public spaces and services meet the evolving needs of a vibrant community. Sarah holds a Masters in Public Administration and enjoys walking, urban hiking, and family bike rides. |

The second Monday of the month is normally devoted to informal social gatherings of club members and their guests at various locations around the Greater Kirkland area. This social is being held in the 350 Club of the Kirkland Performance Center. The entrance is on the west side of the building across the parking lot from the pool. Upon entering through the glass doors, one turns right and enters the south door of the KPC directly into the 350 Club. The entrance is wheelchair accessible. Parking can be limited in the parking lot between the KPC and the city swimming pool, so attendees may wish to utilize the city's free parking garage beneath the Kirkland Library.

Eat the Mike

"Eat the Mike or Lightning Talk Karaoke (a well-known format in tech/conference communities) is an improvised presentation game where speakers take the stage to deliver a short talk using slides they've never seen before. Each presenter gets 2-3 minutes to narrate a random slide deck on the fly, turning unexpected charts, stock photos, and absurd diagrams into a coherent (or hilariously incoherent) story. It's equal parts public speaking practice and comedy night. Participants build confidence presenting under pressure, learn to think on their feet, and discover that the fear of "not knowing what to say" is survivable - and often funnier than a rehearsed talk. Whether you volunteer to speak or just watch, you'll leave with a lighter perspective on presentations and a reminder that the best talks come from authenticity, not perfection."
Daria is a Principal Site Reliability Engineer in Observability Engineering in Azure. With a background in Applied Mathematics, Artificial Intelligence, and Music, Daria is passionate about machine learning, diversity in tech, and opera. In her current role, Daria is focused on changing organisational culture, processes, and platforms to improve service reliability and on-call experience. She has spoken at conferences on various aspects of reliability and human factors that play a key role in engineering practices, and has written for O'Reilly.

Spreading Jane Goddall's Message

John Crocker, MD, is a retired family physician after thirty-five years of practice in Seattle, Washington. He was born and raised in Portland, Oregon and attended Stanford University where he met Dr. Jane Goodall. He received his MD from Case Western School of Medicine in Cleveland.
Dr. Crocker is a popular speaker at high schools, colleges and universities, and other educational venues on primate behavior and has written for the Huffington Post about lessons learned from our closest living relatives. He published Following Fifi (Pegasus) with forward by Jane Goodall in 2018. The book describes his eight months of work as a student with Dr. Goodall studying wild chimpanzees at her study site in Tanzania, East Africa. He has served as the ship physician on Semester at Sea, served as volunteer island doctor for the island of Barbuda in the Caribbean and was medical chief of the Northgate Group Heath Medical Center, serving 30,000 patients in Seattle.
He and his wife raised two boys and lives in Seattle
